The Bookstore has been, and is, the focus of all the Society’s endeavors. Efforts have been made at some fundraising, through appeals and lotteries, always with the intent of making the Bookstore possible, of purchasing shelving, counters, display cabinets, computers, desks, chairs and other necessary items. Essential requirement for the operation of a bookstore is also the advertising that makes the bookstore known: it is placed on various media, newspapers, radio, and TV.
All the above requires continuous attention and resources, evidently. But why would the Society be created with the purpose of operating a bookstore? The reason, very simply, was that there was not in the city at the time a Catholic bookstore. The teachings of the Catholic Church are made known through the spoken word, through the liturgy, but also through the printed word which includes the Bible, the history and tradition of the Faith, the Catechism, the documents which accompany the life of the Church in every age and in our own days. It was felt that authentic teachings were not represented adequately in the inventories of existing bookstores.
The realization of the lack of authentic literature inventories was certainly widespread; the deficiency was not limited to Halifax. It is a fact that at the same time the Universal Church was struggling with a colossal project: the preparation of a “new” Catechism, which would present the continuous teachings on the Faith in answer to contemporary issues. The first English edition of the new Catechism appeared in 1994, the same year Veritas was started. The need for authentic literature was felt much wider and higher than the prayer group meeting at St. Theresa’s church in Halifax. The Veritas solution was not to write or publish new documents, but to ensure that reliable writings were represented in the region.
